The Teddy Bear is now so much part of our lives that it's hard to believe he was only invented in 1902, and is named after Theodore 'Teddy' Roosevelt, the famous hunting President of the USA.To Roosevelt's eternal credit, he couldn't bring himself to shoot the defenceless cub, and ordered it to be set free.Brooklyn candy store owner Morris Michtom quickly worked out a pattern, and, within days, had put together a little jointed toy bear cub, which he put in his shop window and a handwritten notice saying 'Teddy's Bear'. The Bears sold like wildfire, and within a year, Michtom closed his candy store, and founded the Ideal Novelty and Toy Co. - still one of the biggest toy firms in the world over ninety years later. The year was 1937, and although the province of Saskatchewan had only 132 miles of paved road to accompany 2,402 miles of gravel, it was blessed with an energetic group of truckers who felt there was a need to present a united voice when dealing with the provincial government. Thus was born the Saskatchewan Motor Transport Association (SMTA). |

"I had the idea for the convoy when I was driving down the 401 West one night with 2 of my girlfriends and thought wow! this is cool 3 girls rolling down the highway...the idea "female convoy" just popped in my head...I let it simmer in my head for about a week...thinking of different ways to do this...then I thought, if I do this I gotta find a good cause to do it for...what cause affects thousands of women? of course Breast Cancer, so I contacted them, they were a little speachless at first, they never heard of such an event but none the less they liked the idea, they sent me a "community event request" which I filled out and got approved...from there it was a matter of finding where this was going to take place...I choose the 401 as it's the main Corridor between ON and QC, I chose a couple truck stops, one to depart from the other to arrive at...I wanted 2 truck stops that were not very far apart which is why I chose Cornwall and Cardinal (62 km's apart)...and from there I just called businesses all over to get sponsorships, I got 1500$ of fuel in total...gift bags for all the participants (female drivers)...and 2 months after this idea came to me
I have over 7000$ in sponsorships and I'm not done yet!!" |
